Call for a Teaching Artist Assistant

Call for a Teaching Artist Assistant

CUP is seeking a Teaching Artist Assistant to work with a CUP Teaching Artist and a group of Greenpoint public high school students on a year-long Urban Investigation project exploring the question “Where does the trash go, and who decides?” using collaborative research and design.

This will be CUP’s first ever Digital Investigation! The Teaching Artist Assistant will be helping the CUP teaching artist on all in-class aspects of the Digital Investigation, from facilitating interviews to working with students on a final documentary. Teaching Artist Assistants often go on to work on CUP projects as Teaching Artists.

Like our Urban Investigations, this project will begin with a key question about how the city works. To find answers, students go beyond standard classroom learning and engage in rigorous field research, conducting site visits and interviewing decision-makers and stakeholders. Students then collaborate with the Teaching Artist to produce innovative, engaging works in a variety of media. These projects are taken up by neighborhood organizations and advocacy groups and used to educate others.

The Urban Investigation will take place between September 21, 2015 and June 15, 2016. The project meets twice a week (Monday and Tuesday) from 12:45 pm to 2:20 pm. The position pays a project stipend of $2,300. Teaching experience is not a requirement. Experience with video software, like Adobe Premiere and After Effects, is a plus.

Instructions for Teaching Artist Assistant applicants:

Please submit a cover letter, a resume, and contact information for two references. Send materials as a single PDF named “[Last Name_First Name]_TAAssistant” to apply@welcometocup.org with the subject heading “Teaching Artist Assistant” by 5 pm on Friday, September 4th.

Please address the following in your cover letter:

·       Why are you interested in this position?

·       Why are you interested in working with high school students?

·       What art and design media are you comfortable working in?

·       What is your experience with producing and editing video?

·       Please watch CUP’s first Urban Investigation, Garbage Problems, and share one or two things you learned, and one question you have after watching the video.

CUP is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages people of color, women, LGBTQ, and disabled candidates to apply.
