Call for a teaching artist for a City Studies class | Topic: Urban Planning | Brooklyn and Queens | Academy of Urban Planning and the Queens Museum | $3000 stipend

CUP seeks a teaching artist to lead a City Studies project for high school students in the fall of 2014. The teaching artist will work with CUP and students from the Academy of Urban Planning in Bushwick, Brooklyn to develop, pilot, and implement a new curriculum that uses the Queens Museum’s Panorama to introduce students to urban planning concepts.

The goal of the project is to give entering 9th graders an introduction to urban form, local geography, and basic urban planning concepts using art and design activities centered on the Panorama (a scale model of New York City). The teaching artist will work with CUP and a classroom teacher to develop a 6-hour (2 or 3 session) curriculum. The curriculum will include activities to take place at the Panorama, as well as post-visit activities to help reinforce learned concepts. They will pilot the curriculum after school with a small group of students in early October.

The teaching artists and CUP will then revise the curriculum and implement it in a day-long field trip and in-class, post-trip activities for the school’s entire 9th grade class (of approximately 100 students) in late October or early November.

CUP’s project-based curricula enable students to explore fundamental questions about how the city works through collaborative research and design. CUP teaching artists/designers work with CUP staff and project partners to develop course ideas, schedules, lesson plans, and to document the project.

The teaching artist will be paid $3000, and there is a separate budget for materials and other project costs.
